Mets Fan Will Be Forced To Watch Mets As Part Of Punishment For Running On Field During No Hitter

A somber Diaz previews his new front row seat.
Mets fan Rafael Diaz of Massapequa pleaded guilty in a Queens court Thursday to a misdemeanor crime for running on the field after Johan Santana's no-hitter on June 1. It was originally speculated that the Diaz would receive a lifetime ban from Citi Field and some fines but it turns out the judge had something far worse in store for the lifelong Mets fan.

Beginning on September 17, Diaz will be forced to watch every inning of Mets baseball. That's right, every horrific inning.

Judge William Reinhold told The Apple that banning Diaz from Citi Field didn't seem harsh enough. So in addition to the $1,000 in fines to the city and the $4,000 he must pay to the Mets (presumably to help them re-sign David Wright) Diaz will have to watch every Mets game from a front row seat the Mets have set aside for him.

"Look at the stands during a Mets home game.", said Reinhold. "It looks like the whole city has been banned. What is the point in ordering someone to stay away from somewhere they don't want to be anyway? I think this way will really give him time to think about what he's done."

In accordance with his sentence, Diaz was at Citi Field Thursday afternoon to see his new seat and be outfitted with a specially modified house arrest bracelet. The bracelet activates when a Mets home game is being played. If he is not at the game, the police will be notified and an officer will be dispatched to escort Diaz to his seat.

According to judge Reinhold's sentence, Diaz must attend every game until the Mets are once again a contending ball club so he may want to clear his summer schedule for the next 15-20 years.  In the unlikely event that the Mets do become a winning team again, the bracelet will be removed and Diaz will be banned from Citi Field until things "return to normal".
