Mets Anger Native American Group: Even I Thought I Made This One Up

Mets fans will have to make do with Chief Running Mouth
In what will easily be one of the hardest to top weird stories in this 2013 Mets season, the A.I.C.H. (American Indian Community House) has pulled out of Native American Heritage Day after a disagreement between the Native American organization and the team.

Apparently, when the Mets scheduled Native American Heritage Day for July 25th, they did not realized that the Atlanta Braves would be the opponent. Out of fear that the Braves may see the whole thing as some kind of protest against their brand, the Mets asked the A.I.C.H. if they could, "act less Indian-y."

Angered that the Mets were giving their activities the tomahawk chop to spare the feelings of the Braves, the A.I.C.H. decided simply to pull out of the event.

Who Is The Rightful Ruler Of Metsteros: Comparing The New York Mets Ownership to Game Of Thrones

Last Year's Map Of The Kingdom
I had no intention of bringing up Game of Thrones today but my fellow bloggers started some interesting comparisons between Mets ownership and the HBO mega-hit, which begins it's third season tonight.

Over at Metpolice.com, the Amazon.com bestselling author Shannon Shark believes that the Mets are the Lannisters.

Here, he paints the picture of a team clumsily led by the child king Jeffy Joffrey:
...the kingdom is run by the son of the previous ruler.  The new leader is not particularly well liked and some question his leadership abilities. His upbringing has led him to be completely out of touch with the common folk, not that he cares.

Mets COO Jeff Wilpon: We Have Money To Spend On Free Agents...We Just Don't Remember Where We Put It

Mets fans have been frustrated lately by what they feel is hot stove complacency despite reports saying the team has money to spend.  If the team really does have money, then why haven't they made a move to fill one of their many holes? In an effort to clear up the confusion, we went right to the source, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon.

"The truth is we have money to spend.", Wilpon told The Apple. "The thing is, we currently don't know where we put it.  I was operating under the assumption that Sandy (Alderson) knew where it was, but he came to me looking for money for an outfielder last week and we realized we had a problem."

David Wright took to the podium on Wednesday to formally announce his contract extension with the Mets, but there was another purpose for the press conference.  Standing at the podium in Nashville, David Wright unveiled the Mets new alternate uniform which consists of a blue jersey, blue hat with orange bill, and a dress shirt and tie.

Mets Brain-trust Holds Meeting About Ike, Also Enjoys The Free WiFi At Panera

On Thursday morning Mets GM Sandy Alderson called a meeting of his braintrust.  Attending were Jeff Wilpon, J.P. Ricciardi, Paul DePodesta, manager Terry Collins, and, of course, team mascot Mr. Met.  The meeting was held at a local Panera Bread because of the free WiFi and also J.P. really likes the mac and cheese there.

The Apple was allowed to sit in so here is a transcript of the meeting:

Las Vegas Sportsbook Allows Fans To Gamble On Mets PR Disasters

With the 2012 Mets season set to kick off in just one day, one Vegas sportsbook is giving fans a chance to gamble on which inevitable news stories will embarrass the Metropolitans in the coming year. Here's a look at some of the odds being given by the sports book at the Mirage in Las Vegas.  Which of these are you betting on?

(20-1) - David Wright ends another players season by stepping on them

(40-1) - Fred Wilpon does a magazine interview in which he says David Wright won't get "Jose Reyes" money when he becomes a free agent

Mets Being Sued For Copyright Infringement Over Underdog T-Shirts

It was supposed to be a motivational tool by Mets COO Jeff Wilpon to help rally his ballplayers, but as so often happens in Metsville the organization has once again found itself in legal trouble.  On Monday, the team tweeted this image of a Mets shirt featuring the logo of cartoon hero Underdog. ESPN later reported that the shirts were ordered by Jeff Wilpon as a way of rallying the team.  Innocent enough right?

"Kick A Wilpon" Promotion Leads To Second Straight Black Friday Trampling At Citi Field

Just like last year, the New York Mets hoped to boost sagging merchandise sales at their stadium shop by hosting a black Friday sale early this morning.  Unfortunately for the Mets, the results were similar to last year's debacle, sending several fans to the hospital.

Larry Smith Sneaks A Peek At Sandy Alderson's To-Do List

A few weeks ago your intrepid correspondent got himself his first ever smartphone.  The one I replaced was so old that it had a crank on the side and connected to a party line (too bad you have to be my age in order to appreciate that joke).

Anyway these new fangled phones even have cameras in them.  Did anyone else know that?

It's Always Funny In Flushing

Wilpon Says Mets Plan To Retire Jeter's #2

The New York media has been flooded with Derek Jeter Mania.  Half of all the sports pages in town have been profiles, biographies, and testimonials to the storied Yankee captain.

And on a Saturday afternoon when the only things to watch sports-wise was the Yankees or a womens soccer match, Jeter came through big time punctuating his climb to immortality with a five hit performance, the second of which was a homerun to left field for hit #3000.

Terry Collins Says Cost Saving Pre-Printed Lineup Cards Are Hindering His Ability To Manage The Mets

The Mets return home to Citi Field tonight to take on the Marlins and while most managers prefer the taste of home cooking, Terry Collins is not so thrilled to be back.  The reason? Collins claims that a cost cutting move by the Mets is making him look bad as a manager.

Who's On Second? Larry Smith Spies On Mets Front Office Meeting

Spring training games have gone on for two weeks now and the Mets still haven't officially named their starting secondbaseman. There has been so much speculation about this that Fred Wilpon, his son Jeff, J.P. Ricciardi, and Paul Depodesta hopped on a plane the other day and flew down to Florida for a big confab with GM Sandy Alderson and Manager Terry Collins.

Unlikely Ownership Candidate Of The Day: Charlie Sheen

PROS
  • PA system would blast Wild Thing anytime Sheen is shown on the jumbotron
  • All concessions would be updated giving Citi Field the largest beer and liquor selection in New York State
  • After enough drinks would gladly hit any of the players in-laws, freeing the players from the risk of injury or arrest
  • Keith Hernandez would finally have a drinking buddy within the organization

Breaking News: Jeff Wilpon Releasing Rap Album To Benefit Mets

The younger Wilpon stole the show today at the Mets press conference when he announced that he will be branching out into the world of hip-hop music.  Sporting some cool shades, Wilpon said that he will go by the name Rappin' J-Dubs and hopes to drop his first CD before opening day.  All monies generated from the sale of the album will go directly to Sterling Mets.

Unlikely Ownership Candidate Of The Day: Alyssa Milano

PROS

  • Would be a lot nicer to look at in press conferences than Jeff Wilpon
  • Growing sports clothing empire guarantees financial stability
  • Could use knowledge gained from dating other teams players to assist in scouting
  • Would probably be the first time in history players would be HOPING to get called into the owners office

Non-Fiction Post Of The Week: Metsgrrl Reads The Wilpon Complaint So You Don't Have To

"The Wilpons are rich and arrogant. We knew that already. We wish they didn’t own the Mets. This is nothing new. I’m not going to get worried about them needing to sell the team until we get there. Then I’ll get worried when I have something to worry about."

Bravo to Metsgrrl for summing up how I have felt about this whole Wilpon thing since day one.  Read her entire guide to the Wilpon complaint here.
