Apparently Topps Baseball Card Company Is Unaware That Citi Field Has Been Open For Over Two Years

I picked up one of those team sets of Topps baseball cards the other day and was glad to see that Citi Field got a card this year...that is until I looked at it.  Nice picture Topps. You know they did finish the place right?

Topps To Release Special Gary Matthews Card

It's been a while since we had a good ol' fashioned Gum Stain Saturday but today Andrew over at Sports Card Forum returns with news of a soon to be released insert card from Topps.  It seems Topps has announced that they will be releasing a set of cards honoring useless players with bloated contracts.

The set called "Weak Performance" is a spin-off of their Peak Performance relic cards.  Each card will honor a great underachiever and feature a piece of his actual salary.  Who else to lead the series than our own Gary Matthews Jr.  GMJ is featured on card WP1 shown on the right.

According to Andrew, the real value in these cards is how worthless they actually are.  In many cases the sliver of money is worth more than the card itself.  He expects collectors to remove the money and toss the card in the garbage.  Much like the Mets did with the real GMJ.

Honoring The Subway Series Greatest Wackjobs

In honor of the Subway Series, Andrew over at SportsCardForum sent me this very rare card from the Topps Heritage Series.  This card is extremely rare because Topps stopped half way through printing.  Apparently Topps decided to pull the card from circulation because they decided that these two already get enough undeserved attention.  Coincidently Topps also pulled their Zack Hample card for the same reason.

Are Baseball Cards Going Too Far In The Name Of Authenticity?

My friend Andrew over at Sports Card Forum is a big time collector of David Wright cards.  It is a hobby he has recently begun trying to share with his young son.  So you can imagine his horror when he pulled a David Wright Game Worn Cup Relic card from a recent hobby box of Topps Baseball Series 1.

"At first I was excited to get a Wright relic but then when I took a closer look I threw up a little in my mouth.", Andrew told The Apple.  "I'm trying to get my son interested in cards.  I don't want him touching that.  Plus he's got that creepy tongue sticking out.  The whole thing is just gross."

Sports cards are not the same as they were when we were kids so we went to the source to find out what is going through the minds of the guys at Topps.   David Carter is a marketing rep for the Topps NYC headquarters.  "You have to understand, this is no longer about a nice picture and a piece of gum.  The collectors demand more.", said Carter. "People want to be as close to their favorite star as possible.  We started with jerseys and bats, but people can get those anywhere now.  We had to step our game up."

When asked about the Wright card, Carter told us, "That is a classic card.  What's closer to your favorite player than his jock. Only Topps can get you that close.  It makes Wright's other memorabilia cards look like junk."

At the Apple we agree that Topps is definitely doing something new, we just wouldn't have used the words "Wright's" and "junk" in the same sentence.

David Wright: Selfish Time Traveler?

We at The Apple love baseball cards.  In particular, we love the 2010 Topps baseball cards because of all the great inserts of old time players.  So you can imagine our surprise when we opened a pack of cards and this fell out.  This is a 1951 Topps David Wright "Red Back".

Now of course the logical assumption would be that this a modern day reprint based on an old style, right?  Yeah we're not buying that either.  What we believe we have here is a mystery worthy of a Dan Brown novel and the most definitive proof of time travel ever recorded.

At first we marveled at Wright's magnificence.  Here is a man who time traveled to decades before he was born, got the city to prematurely invent a fourth baseball franchise, and play well enough on that franchise to be immortalized on a card.  Truly, this is an incredible man.

Not so fast.   The more we thought about the angrier we got.  Here is a man with all this power and he squandered it on baseball.  If Wright was truly walking around in 1950, surely there were more pressing issues he could have addressed.   Terrorist attacks, natural disasters, O.J.'s wife?  Wright could have warned us about all these things.  Instead, what does he do?  He plays baseball.

Who the hell does David Wright think he is?
