Jose Reyes. Those two words have inspired a lot of debate and conversation among Mets fans this year. Some want him traded while his value is at it's highest. Others like myself want to keep him around. I have had a love/hate relationship with Jose throughout his career. There have been times when he's done stuff that has driven me up the wall, but then he goes and finds a way to totally redeem himself like he did most recently by releasing his epically cheesy music video.
The video is called "No Hay Amigo". My Spanish is a little rusty but I'm pretty sure it means "I have a lot of money now which I used to buy myself some famous friends in the music industry". Musically, it's your standard reggaeton track with enough auto-tune to make even Paris Hilton sound good but the real genius of this video is in the haunting visuals that will stay stuck in your head long after the video is over...or at least until you click over to that rapper gets hit by ice cream truck video on Youtube again. But enough talk, lets take a closer look.
0:00 - 0:30
Early in the video we learn that Jose Reyes loves the children and giving back to the community but more importantly we meet his first famous friend. He's not quite Fat Joe and he's not quite Big Pun. I'm going to call him Fat Pun. So while Fat Pun sings the hook, at least I think he is but it's hard to tell with all the auto-tune. Anyway while Fat Pun sings Jose Reyes teaches a Dominican youngster how to hit an invisible ball at about the :28 mark.
0:30 - 1:00
Look out, it's a rapping skeleton with dreads & bling!!! Oh wait that's just Jose Reyes. However if you did say a rapping skeleton with dreads and bling I'll give you partial credit since that is technically also correct. Anyway while Jose does his thing we learn that he's got some nice cars and one guy in his crew has a cool bike-thing with three wheels but he has trouble steering it straight.
1:30 - 2:00
Here we meet the Dominican Lil' Wayne. I'm going to call him Pequeno Weezy. Apparently, PW went to one side of the local park while the camera crew went to the other side and they ended up on opposite sides of the fence. They were losing the light so they just said screw it and shot the video through the fence.
2:27 - 2:45
Sure to be a favorite of Mets fans, this segment of the video focuses on Jose's amazing collection of Jose Reyes memorabilia. During the montage, we see many of his awards and learn that his middle name is Bernabe, but the real crown jewel is apparently his Doubleday Award from his days with Capital City.
2:45 - 3:18
Unfortunately the good feelings from the Mets segment are quickly wiped out by...Vin Diesel? I'm pretty sure that's him. Anyway Vin and Jose rap on the doorstep of a friends house. The friend was at work and couldn't let them in, so they drive away in Jose's sports car.
3:20 - 3:50
Here comes the star of the video. This guy is clearly from the Jersey Shore section of the Dominican Republic. I'm going to call him El Situación. I don't know much about this guy but he's got style and that has to count for something.
The rest of the video is just Jose and his friends playing with their toys. At the 4 minute mark, Jose shoots pool with Fat Pun who is now rocking a green Mets cap and they reminisce about the time Fat Pun got locked in a truck...at least that was what I took away from it. There's not much to see but at 4:37 Jose does an awesome impersonation of a bobblehead.
Will Jose be adding a Grammy to his trophy room? Only time will tell.
